Mermaids Cave #2
Some of you might remember the 1st version of Mermaids Cave and wonder why I would bother with a 2nd version.
Well, the reason was that it was to fill a space in our home which is quite dark and the 1st painting was really lost there. Also, although I loved the 1st version for a lot of reasons I wasn’t happy with a few of the design elements so I thought I’d try again.
So… I changed a few things in the composition and decided to do a ‘lighter/brighter version’ for the dark space on the wall!
However, things never go to plan and this work was no exception!! It kept moving in directions I hadn’t intended!!! In the end I stopped fighting and let it have it’s way…
When it was finished (although when is it ever finished in my critical mind…lol!) I didn’t think I liked it as much as the 1st version… but now I’ve lived with it for a week or 2 I think I like it just as much but for different reasons… it has it’s own qualities…
Anyway… see what you think… but believe me the next painting you see here will NOT be another version of this!!! : )

Today the newsletter for the group “Vibrations in Art and Verse – Vavoom” was delivered to my inbox. You could imagine my surprise when I discovered that not only was my painting “Mermaids Cave #2” featured but that I was a featured artist AND the very talented Lisa Jewell had written a poem inspired by my painting!!! WOW!!!
Lisa has very kindly allowed me to share her work here… Thanks Lisa… xx

Mermaids Cave #2
through the waves of
this day into the next
I stroke
a tail tone from
my blessed palette
creating
a earth dwelling
for
you
to visit
each eve
at the coming of dusk
I will
wait
leaving behind my palette
to float the ocean bed
my
flesh
longs to be held
by you
my earth lover

JennyMac replied
Thanks Tots! I’m really glad you can feel that spiritual feeling in this… for me Mermaids Cave certainly has that quality. I have spent a lot of time here over the years… : )
itsallgoodamanda
I think I like it better ,not that the first wasn’t good!,,I think its the moss in this or the tree root but it has more energy or light ,like the light has been let in from the canopy above ,cheers
JennyMac replied
Wow… thanks Amanda! I must have done something right! That’s kinda what I was hoping the effect would be… but sometimes you get too close to the work and wonder if it’s just me seeing it that way! Thanks for the fav too! : )
Denis Molodkin
Excellent work, perfect composition, superb job!
JennyMac replied
Thanks Denis… your comments and support are much appreciated : )
Tatiana R
Wow,this is excellent study of light, and you can paint those details in the shadows how you see it, something that is very hard to achieve in photography! Nice work! :-))
JennyMac replied
Thanks Tanya… That’s exactly what my Grandfather used to say!! Re: shadows… He also said that a painter can rearrange and eliminate elements in a composition which a photographer couldn’t do. I often think he would have loved Photoshop!! He was right into computers from the start and had been extremely experimental in the darkroom too… but he passed away just before photoshop really hit town… Anyway… I digress!! Thanks again… Jen : )
helmutk

JennyMac replied
Thank you Jan… I’m so glad that others can see/feel the magic in this too! Sometimes you can get so close to your own work you wonder if it’s just you that feels the magic… but then… we create for ourselves don’t we? Though it’s so lovely when you create something others like too… : )
Tracey Mac
Oh this is divine, and I agree, it is absolute magic…..........beautiful work Jenny and I’m sure it will look so lovely on your wall!
JennyMac replied
Thank you Tracey… I have just put it in an exhibition (first time in many years!) and my wall does look very bare without it!! My hubby tells me I need to paint faster… I tell him I would be happy to oblige but he would have to keep me…lol! So I think it will be a while yet before I can devote myself totally to art… hmmm…. dreams… ; )

MoonSpiral
Hum…I think I might like the 1st one slightly better, but they are both AMAZING paintings. I can see why you would need to lighten it up for a dark space though. Either way, it is a breathtaking scene and congrats on the feature!!!!
JennyMac replied
Thank you for your very thoughtful comment MoonSpiral! You’re right… there are aspects of the 1st painting which I really love… but the second one does what I wanted it for… It really didn’t turn out the way I intended in the first place… It sort of took on a life of its own and I decided not to fight it! : )
