This painting is very self-referencing. The Arches block in the painting is the same kind a paper I painted the actual painting on. The tubes of paint, palette, and brush depicted are the very ones I used to paint the painting.

Watercolor on arches cold-pressed paper. Original is aproximately 16 × 22 inches.

Wow, Jenny, how very clever….looks like the horn is popping right off the page.

  • Thank you. That was the idea, to have it rise up out of the paper.

Oh my goodness, Jenny!! Your talent amazes me! Do you always work from such a small pallet?? Looks like an Arches block….

  • It is an Arches block. And yes, I usually use 7 or 8 pigments at most. New Gamgee, Hansa Yellow, Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, a Quin Red, Burnt Sienna, and Dioxian Purple are all I use in most paintings. Often, not all of those. Cerrulium Blue, Magnisium Blue, Thalo Green, Raw Sienna, French Ultramarine, and Red Iron Oxides make occasional appearances for very specific reasons.

I guess it would just sound too Korny to say that it just comes right off the page….lol. Very clever work that does truly have great depth and fine realism to it.

  • I don’t mind if it’s corny, because I really want that tuba to look like tuba to look likes it bursting out at you. Thank you for taking the time to say so.
