Please note, the water buffalo featured in this work is not Oink.
Along with her wonderful artwork, Julie has also written this beautiful, touching poem about Oink’s past and present circumstances.
There was a time when I was not alone
Here in green field grass of home
Some pig friends kept me company
But they made the strangest noise to me
Try as I might, to block this sound
In my head it went around
I started to talk, just the same way
As I watched them roll in mud and play
So from then on I took the name
To match that sound, the very same
The name is Oink and it suits me well
It’s a little strange, but I think its swell
Lately though, I live in fear
My pig friends gone and nobody near
When bullies come to torment me
A play thing just to hurt they see
The feed me mustard, burn my hay
Shout and prod until I run away
The make my drinking water thick
By adding soap that makes me sick
But worse than that, what they have done
Is hurt me for their misguided fun
They threw some bricks, which caused me pain
I needed pills to ease the strain
For now I try to stay inside
Feeling safer when I hide
I used to like to run outdoors
But I’m scared to do that anymore
I do have many others come
And when they visit, I have fun
They give me treats, like broccoli
They’re kind and they show love for me
The other kind, the ones that try
To taunt me and to make me cry
With wicked stones, they made me sore
I know not why they hurt me so
So soon I hope to have a fence
To block them out with their offense
To keep me safe here in my home
Where I like live, in peace, and left alone.

Things that shouldn’t be there, are still being found in his food unfortunately, I think a new holding pen has been put in now, so the more security the better :-)
