I Wanted To Write You A Love Song

I have a mix of poems I’ve been writing offline, both hard, soft, clean and dirty… This is one of the softer ones, it began without rhyme and then somehow kind of stumbled into a pattern of rhyming, I may revise and edit it some time, but for now, this is all there is.

I wanted to write you a love song
but the words felt awkward
falling from my fingers
like a clumsy adolescent
all limbs and no brain
or a newly born foal
falling and then trying
to find its feet again

I wanted to write you a love song
but the words that I needed
to describe how I feel
are an unfamiliar language
and don’t do justice
to the feelings so strong
and so real
inside of me

I wanted to write you a love song
filled with gratitude and care
at how you managed to dig through
all of the layers that are me
to find something of substance
hidden there
which is something that nobody else
has been able to do
but I can’t find the words
to be able to say
that I thank you

I wanted to write you a love song
find the melody and tune
that makes words sing
and describes all of the hope and laughter
just having you around
can bring
and you don’t even need
to say too much
sometimes it’s just in the way
that you reach out and touch
the parts of me
nobody else has found
it’s in the silent space between us
and in the lack of sound
a feeling that can’t be expressed
that just sits in the very heart
of my chest
waiting for you to breathe life into it

I wanted to write you a love song
but I find it easier
to talk dirty and rough
because I’m so much more used to
playing a role
and acting tough
defending myself without a war
accepting less
while taking more
scared that if I don’t play it hard
your feelings and words will break my facade
and I’ll expose more of myself
than I know how to handle
your love shining through me
burns like a candle
of hope
kinda makes me feel scared
because I’d have to acknowledge
how much I cared
and sometimes it hurts less
to know less
or feel less
and say less

I wanted to write you a love song
a kind of thank you song
for helping me through
the times and places
I could only get to
with you by my side
to guide me and steer me
through the memories I’d chosen
to keep buried so long
that only you could help me
to feel strong
to deal with
and feel with
those places I couldn’t
handle alone
where you’re the only person
I’ve trusted or known
well enough to open
myself up to you
to let you inside
let you break through
the borders and barriers
that surround me
you found me
and cared

I wanted to write you a love song
but I’m just not used
to soft sentimental shit
and sometimes even though it’s wrong
that which is familiar
is so much easier to handle
than to let it
break down or make way
for feelings or words
that are too hard to say
all the things I would tell you
all the dreams I could sell you
all the promises I could make you
and places I’d take you
if I could only write you
a love song

I wanted to write you a love song
but instead
these words were the best I could do
and I know they don’t really
truly describe
the range of feelings
that I feel inside
but they’re all that I have
and all I could find
in the recesses and alcoves
of my mind…

So they’ll have to do
these words to you

that should have been

a love song.

  • Crowmanic

    Crowmanic

Wow… JB… you went a long way with this one!! +Fav and it resonates even more so because, it is so uncannily close to something I wrote many years ago, and have not (to my recollection) made “public” now having read this… guess what, I’ll probably do so soon ;-) (oh yeh, of course I’ll get about 6 visits, 3 will be mine, and possibly 3 comments) [shrug]

  • JenniferB replied

Lol… I just came back from reading your one which in my opinion is so much better than mine, I kind of feel a bit uncoordinated and clumsy in my brain as I stumble through words to write anything soft or romantic. :-)

  • Crowmanic

    Crowmanic

As I just wrote in response to your comment to my “I Want To” ... I read yours (this one) 1st… and got motivated to put mine online. Now I’m starting to feel caught on a carousel chasing comment/response betwixt you and I… help!! There’s a glitch in the Matricks!!

  • JenniferB replied

Hahaha! Synchronicity and weird coincidences happen around me all of the time, we must have been in the same mind-sets when we wrote our poems, pondering life, love and what not. :-)

  • Wendy Slee

    Wendy Slee

this is very beautiful writing…... whatever you feel or say, these words most of all speak with sincerity and with a voice that is distinctly rising beyond the harshness of experience and allowing the fresh breath of hope to emerge…. and the basic human belief in the existence of love and connections that are real…..

  • JenniferB replied

Thanks Wendy, it was one of those poems you write when you’re still half asleep and feeling in dream mode.

  • Astoreth

    Astoreth

  • JenniferB replied

  • ambient-1

    ambient-1

This is wonderful! Not full of sappy sentimentality. Edgy, raw, vulnerable and honest. I would prefer that someone write this to me than so much stuff that sounds like a hallmark greeting card. I love your ability to be sweet, dirty, playful brutally honest. I don’t know who you wrote this for but he or she is very lucky!

I love it! Well written and totally engaging! Kudos Jennifer!

  • JenniferB replied

Ah… Strange you should mention a hallmark greeting card, that was one of the things I was scared my writing was turning into! lol Thanks Robert. :)

  • butchart

    butchart

you put it out there… and i’m glad you did….... it took courage and it is wonderful…........ thank you…......b

  • Damien Venditti

    Damien Venditti

i love all of this especially how it began without rhyme and then slowly as it progressed began to
like you and the writing were gathering a momentum … it would make a wonderful L.Cohen type piece set to some acoustic guitars and maybe violin

  • JenniferB replied

thanks Damien, I love Leonard Cohen yet I was only introduced to his poetry and music just recently, weird but I feel a bit strange about writing softer pieces of work, each day I shove it a little bit further back into my archives. Thanks. :-)

  • Damien Venditti

    Damien Venditti

i feel a bit the same about the softer romance pieces plus i think there harder to write
