Another Bar, Another Bed

hmmm… going through a softer, contemplative phase at the moment and listening to far too much Leonard Cohen! Lol

Just warming up to writing again and I think I’ve forgotten how to write something that doesn’t rhyme, though I’d like to give it a shot some time.

She thinks of all the men she’s met
strangers with forgotten names
and how they breathed life into darkness
just to play their foolish games

Throwing caution to the wind
they rolled a dice and placed their bets
gambling on a night of passion
in exchange for life’s regrets

Another bar, another bed
another poem yet to write
another song to fill the silence
of a cold and lonesome night

Two moths dancing to a love song
wings caught up in passion’s flames
trying to avoid the sorrow
of life’s dark and twisted games

She takes your hand to pull you closer
‘till your bodies merge as one
you have no need to know her better
nor to find out where she’s from

She’s just another weekend stranger
seeking refuge from her life
just another tender body
someone’s lover, someone’s wife

And when final song is over
footprints stain an empty floor
you both escape to find your refuge
somewhere else beyond the door

Another bed, another story
about a girl who’s done you wrong
another stranger share’s your glory
whispering life’s lonesome song

Bodies writhe and merge together
shadows dance across her thighs
words of love conceal your feelings
daylight wears a thin disguise

And as you fall across her body
run your fingers through her hair
surrendering to sleep’s soft mercy
when you wake she isn’t there

you reach across the bed to find her
only to touch emptiness
permanence slips through your fingers
like the satin of her dress

Another day another week
another month, and year
another drink and lonely lady
helps to drown your fear

Another bar, another bed
another poem yet to write
another song to fill the silence
of a cold and lonesome night…

i could very much hear this as a L.Cohen type song
and what i like a lot is that you are great at writing the softer introspective poems as you are at the harsher manic ones … i am very interested in hearing this put to music .. i have plans to do the same to some of my poems, but i’ve still got my guitar set to LOUD .. i want to play the acoustic better … anyway i really loved this Jen well done : )

  • JenniferB replied

Thanks Damien, would love to hear some of your own poems put to music some time, I was listening to some real venting poetry on YouTube earlier and it made me feel like writing raging manic shit again, I’m so easily influenced by what I hear, Lol. :-)

O.O That’s one awesome poem. Sad, but awesome.

  • JenniferB replied

it’s a bit contrived compared to most of my early stuff, so I’m still not sure about this one, but thanks. :)

  • ArcadiaTempest

    ArcadiaTempest

I am reading above you feel this is a bit contrived….. I found nothing artificial or too over paced about this. Compliment yourself on writing that delivers with a sorrowful undercurrent about the need to feel loved, touched, wanted, desired…..just seen. XX

  • JenniferB replied

Thanks Arcadia, I don’t know, it felt like more effort went into this than was necessary.

  • mstrace

you will . . . there’s too much going in that pretty head of yours for it not to spill out . . . i sometimes do the blurt it all out thing & throw the 1st page away, i just start scribbling & eventually find something meaty to write about . . . i’m no where near as prolific as our friend shoaib though
