Something about memories, secrets, past, present, future and who really gives a fuck anyway?

The internet is a strange place, for many, like myself, it becomes a safe place, a place of refuge, warmth and protection, the life we reveal to others is portrayed on snapshots, tiny colourful glimpses of the entire picture, cryptic messages carved on the damp. cavernous walls of poems, stories and prose.

Away from the internet we live, breathe, fuck, fight, earn a living, pay off debts, owe and feel obligated to people, in general we complicate our lives, more often than not, taking the easy road simply to please other people, keeping the peace to avoid conflict and confrontation.

Life itself becomes a metaphor for codependency and we let others who depend on us suck the life force out of us. In taking care of others we lose ownership of ourselves… Our identities fall into the messed up, murky mosh-pit of everyday living.

Some people have precious memories to look back on, images in the back of their minds that bring a smile to their faces causing them to sigh and shake their heads from side to side…

Other people recall only painful nightmares and the memories that make them smile are far and few between.

I think it’s important to remember that today’s experiences will one day become tomorrow’s memories, they’ll become the movies and photographs we replay in our minds over and over again…

We can only change and shape those images by adding newer, happier ones to the album, and that can only be achieved in the present, by the things we do today.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could put our memories through photoshop, edit, soften and enhance them?

Ah shit, I’m just rambling, I haven’t written fuck all in a while and this is the only way I can get my mind back into gear… Creating letters and words out of my thoughts, that are unfortunately, due to a cocktail of mood stabilising chemicals, pretty limited.

Sometimes I have to shut everything off, hold everything back, breathe everything in and close everything down in order to open myself up and let it all out. On those days it can seem like I’m non-existent…

But I’m still here, just behind your computer screens, feeling and thinking, but saying nothing.

We all have our secrets I guess…

You may be rambling, but, it’s a very enlightened ramble. It was interesting read what you think, it comes close to mirroring my own state of mind recently. I want to tell the world to fuck off, leave me alone, go away. Unfortunately, I can’t as I need the world just to stay alive, and others, whom I care about, need me tro help keep them “in” the world in the sense that I do things they can’t or won’t, for various reasons. As you say, it’s sometimes easier to keep the peace, but, it would be nice to be able to please no-one other than myself, even if it’s only once in a blue moon.

Memories are precious, they are one way of knowing where we’ve been, and if they’re happy ones, they give us a better feeling, about ourselves and the world in general. I hope your memories are more happy than sad. Take comfort in the knowledge that people care about you and would miss you if you left their lives in any way.

  • JenniferB replied

Aww… Thanks for your sweet, insightful words clarkey, yep, sometimes life can feel like one huge debt that needs repaying! No wonder some people declare themselves bankrupt so that all of the pressure goes away. I think everyone needs a little ‘Me Time’ every once in a while. :-) xox

You say it so well and I totally relate…...and had a smile about the photoshop comment…hmmm….wish I could photoshop a LOT of things in my life LOL…..
Regardless of your thoughts about yourself and your creativity, I for one both “see” and admire the small glimpses of “you” that you release to the e-world via your writing and art…..however camouflaged they might be by the anonymity or freedom of the internet

I’m in reverie inside your so called rambling
    I say bollocks.
Your (rambling) writing is insightful, it is pure, it is real, it is hopeful, it is whimsical, and it is you.

I love the idea of taking memories and softening
I love the idea of taking memories and sharpening…

You are right we show glimpse here of who we are….for me I have a voice that I’m often too shy to use in the “real” world.

I too have to shut everything off and retreat to my cave….strangely enough I’ve learnt to retreat to my cave while still functioning in my so called normal world, of work and commitments. I’m sure nobody realises I’m on auto pilot.

Wonderful and thought provoking writing, Jen… xxx

  • JenniferB replied

Thanks for your enlightening, evocative words Lisa, yes, I really do think many people live two separate lives these days, one on the internet and one in reality, the thing with the internet is that we can filter our thoughts and experiences so that only those things we want people to see make it through, there are so many more less glamorous, exciting things going on in our lives that never make it past the editor’s cut, rolls of life sitting coiled and tangled on the cutting room floor. :) See! Your comment was as equally thought provoking! You’re an artform in itself! :)xox

  • Astoreth

    Astoreth

well Jen…I promise you, this piece has opened my eyes…..it is so bloody true…. I for one, absolutely HATE confrontation…so I’ve chosen to be a people pleaser, which is actually sickening because you leave yourself totally out of the equation so that someone else will be happy and you walk away miserable because you didn’t say or fight for what you wanted to say or fight for…..eeeuuuww…..I hate that feeling!! I have literally allowed the life-force to be sucked out of me by the needy…to the point where I could no longer smile….I could only cry with them because that is all they do!! well…I realised that and only I can change it….like everything else in my life. I truly am not obligated to get immersed in the sidewalk level of the misery of the world and I need to make some beautiful memories for myself too…which might sound selfish to some but truly, it no longer sounds or feels slefish to me. This writing of yours truly confirmed that!! Thanks Jen. xxxx

  • JenniferB replied

I don’t think that giving something back to yourself or creating happy memories for yourself is selfish, not when you’ve spent the larger part of your life living and giving to others, I’m glad if my writing has been able to help you in some way, as writers we all hope that people can take something from the emotions and experiences we portray that can alter their lives or thinking for the better. Most of my writing over the years has been very therapeutic and self-healing, so it’s a good feeling to be able to write something that makes others feel altered and better in some way, thanks for sharing your story with me, you’re both an extraordinary person and writer. :-)

Creating letters and words out of my thoughts, that are unfortunately, due to a cocktail of mood stabilising chemicals, pretty limited. Shaft the Mood Stabilising Chemicals… We take them because there is need to appear operation in the world we need to provide what makes us survive. It’s words like these that have form and meaning and create music that resonates in the minds of many – because we know the same rhythms as you.

I’m onvinced that it’s not the creativity that is so limited by such ‘stabilisers’ as it is our experience of them. The volume and one is limited in our experience of life rather than the sound of life itself being silenced.

Write on dear Jen – in the words of You’ve Got Mail – You are a Lone Read.

As far as your observance of the Internet personality versus the Public and Real Personalities I believe you are very right. I wonder about how many memory creation moments I am missing out on by sitting right here looking at a screen.

  • JenniferB replied

mmm… I want to come off the meds but I’ve been advised against it right now, wouldn’t want to do anything drastic and end up in the psyche unit again!!! Life is what it is, there’s always something to be learnt from it I guess and maybe we should be ‘out there’ living and experiencing things, but sometimes it feels a whole lot warmer and safer in here. :-) xox

  • woof

    woof

BRAVO!!!! :) it can’t get better than that!!! it’s funny how the minds at times just takes over and the happy or fucked up memories we love to hold to so dearly as if they were precious pearls, takes us on a trip. sometimes that trip might be back to the past, maybe happy ones- god he was a great lover or fucked up ones-
that fuck never told me he was married. then there are times it takes us to the future… neither are helpful. sucking up our life as you said. and when we come to think about it, the most important time is… the present. if one stays in the present, the moment of being in the now, one would see the past and
the future aren’t important at all. for the past is the past, and the future will come
with the steps we taking NOW. Now I’m rambling on… it’s early here, so i might not be making any sense… oh well, what’s in important is that i LOVE WHAT YOU WROTE!!!! :)

  • JenniferB replied

No woof, you made perfect sense! All we really have are our memories and the here or now, I try to replace as many shitty memories I can with better ones, but sometimes bad experiences are unavoidable.
