Black Crown Night Heron Inside-Out. Had never seen this before! Near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina USA. Nikon D700/Nikkor 50mm lens.
Top Shelf Wildlife, Nov 10, 2012

I treasure connections with those who are touched in some way by nature’s beauty. During those magic moments, we share a special awe in nature’s presence. We are compelled to see and share. Connections make us who we are and relationships within nature give our lives meaning.

Oh my, this really is up close and personal! Somehow I have to believe that this is not what you were expecting to be the main focus of the pic when you aimed the camera….LOL.. What an unusual capture, Joe, and well done! Sandy

  • Thanks Sandy. I was shocked. Had never seen anything like that before. It must normally be well down inside the throat—Perhaps that “organ” helps them regurgitate fish, etc. for young on the nest.

Super sharp focus with excellent details! That eye is ready to pop out….. lol Fantastic shot!

  • Thank you Rose! The sun was at a great angle, and this heron seem uninhabited. Usually, getting anywhere near them is a feat itself.
