Anhinga's Successful Swim by Joe Jennelle

Greeting Cards & Postcards

Available to buy on…

Anhinga’s swim underwater spearing fish, then bring them to the surface to batter them into submission usually on a tree branch. This anhinga had done all of that, dunked the fish into the water to wet it for swallowing, and was just ready to complete the cycle when I captured this image this morning.

I treasure connections with those who are touched in some way by nature’s beauty. During those magic moments, we share a special awe in nature’s presence. We are compelled to see and share. Connections make us who we are and relationships within nature give our lives meaning.

    Fantastic capture…what a beautiful bird!

  • Thank you Pamela! They look like they are form the jurassic era. But they are so well equipped for swimming underwater, spotting and spearing fish, and bringing them to the surface for dining. They are masters of the air and water, but their huge webbed feet give them difficulty when landing on a tree branch. They clumsily plop onto the branch, sway briefly, and have difficulty grasping to get their balance, humorous to watch.

Great capture Joe,thought it was a snake in the fingerprint photo..perfect lighting and colors…T

  • Thank you Thomas. They are also known as “snake birds” because in the water their body is subsurface with only the neck and head above water. Really appreciate your great feedback!
