This little owl had just been released into the wild from VINS, a raptor rehabilitation center near Woodstock, Vermont. It was my good fortune to witness the release and the post release shock of this owl and a sibling—The two little owls were suddenly freed after having being raised from tiny chicks by the VINS staff. Perhaps you can see the fear and apprehension in his/her facial expression (If that is even possible for an owl). As far as I am concerned, I see both fear and apprehension and felt the same way myself for both owls as they struggled with being free, hearing the call of the wild, but not wanting to leave behind all that they had ever known.
