Remembering

Sun shining through the window
On the 14th floor
Office morning conference
Door opens
Donna speaks words not making sense
A plane hit one of the World Trade Centers
That cannot be right
What does that mean

Man at the front continues the meeting
But we cannot listen
Our minds are racing
Was it on purpose
Will LA be next
Which plane was it
Who is hurt
Where are my friends

Suddenly Donna enters again
Other WTC building
Another plane
We are stunned in silence
Tears start streaming

Cell phones are pulled from pockets and purses
TVs are pulled from closets and plugged in
People are coming in
We all watch in horror
Crying uncontrollably men and women together

Lines are all busy
We cannot get through
Told not to enter NYC
Our friends, our family, our colleagues
Where are they
Are they beneath the rubble or safe

We may go home or stay
I buy the remaining flags at VFW
Gone in five minutes
Unified at the office
No squabbles today
Hearts broken and angry
Proud of those making the greatest sacrifice
Firefighters, police officers, EMTs
Entering hell to save a life
Knowing they will likely die

Today I remember all 2,998 people, from over 90 different countries, killed/missing from all the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC.

Very memory provoking. We all know just where we were when we got the news, and the emotion of seeing it replayed over and over again still comes back. Thanks for remembering with me.

  • Thank you for the comment. Yes, yesterday was difficult at times. I think many have forgotten in a way but for those of us in NY, PA & DC the emotions are still fresh, like it happened just yesterday. So many innocent lives and great heroes were lost on that day. It is not history yet – it is current – the effect is still felt.
