This is a theme that won’t let me go. For once I have the desire to repeat something until I get it where I feel it needs to go. The symbols pull together so much of mythology and so many symbols of the feminine that have been corrupted.
The lily was a symbol of innocence and purity and brides often carried them in their bouquet. Now very often, it’s a funeral flower! In a way that too is fitting as the Mother of all Life is also the Womb/Tomb we return to and are welcomed with open arms according to myth. I can’t bring myself to use the swastika (also a symbol of the feminine) because of the level of corruption that symbol has been subjected to and the shock or hurt it may cause.
And it’s about time that ‘Crone’ became a compliment again. Wisdom is the term that goes hand-in-hand with crone. Fecundity with Mother – and not just for giving birth, but for all forms of creation.
As for virginity … it was a symbol rich in meaning and only touching on the sexual. A virgin was the promise of Spring, and the tabula rasa that Life would write on and whose story had yet to be told (and that’s just touching the surface). She was precious indeed.
I confess to being intimidated by the subject matter as well as motivated and excited by it. So yes, there will be more on this theme, I just hope I will be able to do it justice.
