Many ideas came together with this drawing. I’ve been fascinated with spirals, especially spiral shells, since I was a little girl. Latterly I discovered they are a strong Goddess symbol and often seen in Minoan art (something else I particularly like). There is the connection to the sea itself – tempestuous, unpredictable, always beautiful and a great sustainer.
I miss being closer to the ocean and that too is part of this image. While the ocean is active 24/7, the sound is makes is (for me) the sound of the whole planet breathing and is very contemplative. I wanted to capture something of the feeling of both stillness and yet the calm observation of minute details that mindfulness engenders.
Oddly the paper colour scanned as white but left traces of its tint on the drawing itself – go figure!
