This is my first test film through my 8 holed pinhole camera It was shot just near Castlemaine in the bush on Fuji Reala with 5 second exposures… Not exactly sure why the film has come out with a red cast… some more investigative work will be required to knot that puzzle out.. I figured out it was because I loaded the film back to front and that is what happens with negs the wrong way round! Cool!!.. I am pretty happy with the results of the sharpness of focus and pretty consistent exposure as well….

More to come in the future!

I am lucky!! Featured twice on the home page

oh wow, how cool does it look.
the red just adds to the drama!
    fantastic work!
good luck trying to work out why you got the cast, a few variables there.
imagine editing this slightly, wow! ;-) xox

  • yeah I am a little lost on why its so red….. maybe the scanner…. I thought perhaps I had loaded the film back to front, which can cause that to happen, but I don’t think I did after going back over my process…. hmmm…

Yeah it needs cleaning up, but I was mostly interested in seeing the true results from the camera and to see if it needs any adjusting. I am thinking of putting an extra hole on the bottom and the top to make it a 10 hole, so the edges overlap a little more. There are a few holes already in there, so will have to see if there is space left =P

omg this is amazing jem… the sky really is burning this is just so fab…. great work… can’t help with the colour cast though… fuji usually returns a blue/green cast… might be to do with the scanning…. but whatever it really truely looks fantastic

  • yeah its totally weird…. I am wondering if its just the pack that it came from and am keen to get back to the store and buy the rest if it is… so many things could have happened to cause it, and as you suggested, quite possibly the scan did it. Its so much fun playing around with this, and I am thinking of adding more holes to get the images to overlap more…

Thanks for your feedback Juilee =D

wow wow! This is a far more complicated camera than the one I made today….and I could do with applying a bit of mathematics to mine. I have a butter shortbread tin camera with paper plates! I’m just having a break from the darkroom now and might just have something to show in an hour or so!
So from all those figures you manage to work out an exposure and it works? how do you manage 8 pinholes? just throw a blanket over it? how do you manage to measure the size of your pinhole? can you send me somewhere for a diagramatic maths lesson?

thos red is fantastic, I wouldn’t worry about it…it works!

  • righto I have the perfect thing for you…. go here and you don’t have to hurt your brain with maths Great info and make sure you download the little pinhole designer tool – it ROCKS!

As for managing the pinholes I use a really technical shutter setup of gaffa tape that I pull open and close up individually. So one hole at a time. I love the red too, but for my photo shoot next weekend, I need the colours to be true. However I shall make sure that I get some more of this film for other stuff, its bloody gorgeous!

  • oh yeah and as for measuring the size of your pinhole, get the smallest pin you can find – 0.6mm is about standard for sewing pins. Or if you can get an embroidery needle. You need a pin chuck (which you can get from hardware stores) and a hard but giving surface. Make sure you twist the needle as you gently push it into the tin. Stop when the needle is only about half way up the tip, try not to go any further. So depending on your focal length it will depend on your pinhole diameter. Use that program and it will help you to figure that out. The rest is experimenting to get it right.

How exciting is this?! Looks wonderful…I wish I could see it bigger and get into all the detail.
I’ve never had a red cast…plenty of blue/green, but not red…ahh, the unpredictable peculiarities of pinhole!! I love it in this image…so fiery!
    Can’t wait to see more…

  • thanks Steph… Still a bit of tweaking to do, but its getting there. How good is the film… so totally at a loss for why, but I like it. =D

definitely, i agree, you need to get your testing right.
i love how the trees and all images become warped with pinhole cameras, it’s like there is a little magical fish lens in there. hehe
before you add more holes though, i reckon you should play with the exposure more.
was it a cloudy or sunny day, morning, afternoon, middle of the day etc.
    the sharpness is just fab.
by editing, i just meant if it’s possible at all to see the exposure of the foreground more or is that the overlap you speak of.
our lil master steph, is gonna be so proud when she feasts her eyes on this.
i can’t wait to see more too.
my pinhole only has the one boring hole. LOL
i want wanna these. ;-) xox

  • yeah I took the shot at around 11:30 am and it was partially cloudy… so its really hard to tell about the exposure, because I don’t know if the film has effected the results… I am going to put some more film through, but slide this time to see how that comes out. The other issue I have come up against is that the pinholes vary in size and I am not sure what the exact fstop of the camera is, so I am judging it on the smallest hole, but perhaps I should do it the other way around or find a happy medium…. Ahhh its all about testing. Might start mucking around with b+w so I can develop it at home. Cheaper that way!

Totally agree with the warping effect. very cool. And no pinhole could be boring, even one hole is wonderful. I would love to see some of yours =D xx

hey jem first thing go and buy all the rest of that film fast as you can…. what ever has gone wrong with it is all go goodness for you… next thing your holes are too spaced out… more holes needed but your aperture looks fine so that’s a good thing…. fab and how exciting is this with you and soxy playing riffs of each other and steph exhibiting her fabtabuous work …. so cool

  • hehe, if I get hold of it, I will send you a roll. MAN Steph is truly the pinhole goddess, her work is astounding and she should be exhibiting.

Yeah I agree that it needs more holes… Just hope that it won’t overlap with the holes I have already put in there.

I am in love with Soxy’s coffee developer, those images she posted look amazing. So dark and broody and look like they are straight out of the 1800’s
