Lubitel 166B Love!!
So I finally put a roll of film through my not so new Lubitel camera. And after figuring out its quirks and oddities I managed to produce a few shots that I am very happy with. They are as follows.

Memory of a Hill

Lost Children’s Passage

Field

Criss Cross

Memories Fade with Time
They were shot at the Lost Children’s Passage in Musk Vale and on the way to Maryborough, on XP2 film.

mmm my goodness they be spendid jem… love to see these as big poster sized prints and gorgeous and shimmery…... fab work from you and the little camera…..:)
jemimalovesbigted replied
thanks so much Juilee! I was stoked when I got these back actually. They have gotten me all excited to go out and shoot some more today! Its a funny little camera and the view glass is a bit tricky to work out, but I think I may have a handle on it now. So wish me happy shooting =D

we should organize a toy camera exo sometime
jemimalovesbigted replied
Sounds like a FANBLOODYTASTIC idea! Count me in. Now what do we need to do to make it happen??

Excellent shots if that’s the first film.
The Lubitel is such a versatile camera isn’t it? And, used right, it gives some amazingly high-quality shots too.
jemimalovesbigted replied
thanks Dave, its actually the second, but I don’t count that one because I accidently put a roll of 220 through it and didn’t realise and they don’t have numbers on the back of them. So I actually only took 2 frames, panicked and ended up winding the rest through.
Yeah I am stoked with the quality, the view finder is a little bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it….

Nearly got one of these myself last week but went with the kodak duaflex. I’ve just discovered vintage cameras and im in heaven. These turned out really good. I particularly like the last 2.
jemimalovesbigted replied
Cool! Have you uploaded any of the shots from it yet? I too am addicted to vintage cameras, I have quite a collection going now, and I only buy them if they work. Have an old box brownie that someone gave to be to try out too.
Tracy Wallace
Not yet, Its an ebay purchase and i was hoping it would have arrived today, but didn’t. I’m hoping it comes tomorrow.
jemimalovesbigted replied
oooh! how bloody exciting! =D
Soxy Fleming
wow that looks fun…what is the trick with the viewfinder?
jemimalovesbigted replied
no trick really it was just not very well designed and is quite hard to see what you are shooting if you don’t have it exactly right. Its also very hard to focus, but thankfully there are numbers on the focus lens so you just have to guestimate it really.

Forget viewfinders, shoot from the hip. These images are amazing! Toy cameras always win!
jemimalovesbigted replied
thank you Mr Dick! I have to agree shooting from the hip has an extremely strong appeal. Promise to do a roll doing just that.
Dave Pearson
Can’t say I’m a huge fan of this “shoot from the hip” thing, on the whole. Personally I prefer to shoot like this as much as possible. ;-)
jemimalovesbigted replied
ahhhh a tripod man. I bring my own out when I know exactly what I am going to shoot and under low light conditions, but generally its just me and holding my breath.
Dave Pearson
Well, to be fair, it’s less about the tripod and more about the composition. I love to try and carefully compose the image in that little square window. I can see the appeal of “shoot from the hip” but, personally, I find playing with composition much more exciting and rewarding.
(that’s not to be critical of anyone else’s approach, far from it, but I do personally think that “forgetting the viewfinder” is missing out on a lot of the fun, beauty, design and utility of the Lubitel).
