boy in car

so i’m in the car driving tyler to register for drivers
ed…he’s busy playing his latest cold play cd for
me, switching songs, yadayadayada

i look over at him (in my mind) i’m thinking, “who
the hell are you?” …tall, skinny, muscular
kid, brown hair messed up from just getting out of
the shower, hairy legs, a deep voice and funky
laugh.

what does he see when he looks over at me…little
asian mom, with her seat jammed up against the wind
sheild, squinting to see if the light has changed,
wondering if she REALLY knows where she is going,
(and YES I DO!!!!!!!, i know exactly where this
place is!!!!)

we make it (to the RIGHT place), into a room full
of parents sitting with their children, filling
out applications. there is a man talking/explaining,
but i’m not listening b/c i’ve been through this
b/f with lise, only now this is tyler, out LITTLE
BOY!!!!!! who never wanted to leave my sight, who
always gave me run hugs…..our youngest, who i just
figured would always be our little baby….

“you can pay by check or credit card $350…” Whoaaaa
suddenly i’m listening. next thing i’m writing out
a check, signing papers, filling out a riding schedule
…feeling like i’ve been HAD!!!!! this is NOT FAIR!!!

i glance up and look across the table at tyler and his
friend sarah, aprehensively eager to learn to drive,
laughing & talking to each other…

i sign the check, sign the application, sign the permission
slip, this short asian mom…getting smaller, letting
go….

i love you mr ty…
