Pond (Large Watergarden)-How to Make a Pond by

Watergardens are great for attracting wildlife, …the watergardening projects helped to attract the lizards to the Gourley garden. TN. Designed the garden over several years. This pond has been looked forward to in the garden, although a plan from the start…the trees and other things were planted for the pond…Enjoyed and took care of watergardens, raised Koi, learned plants from working in the garden. / MAKING A POND Tractor dug the large hole, shoveled out shelves around some of the edge, then dug deeper in the center, …put a large piece of heavy rubber down-roofing rubber, hosed clean, …used a lot of rocks that were not being used, from the garden. Place large rocks to hold down rubber, or place some shoveled over river rocks, while your are working. Some river rocks were bought, and some gathered from the river at a friends. Areator can be used, for oxygen, and clearing up water, ..falls really add oxygen. Natural, plants and lilies help oxygenate the pond for fish, some for food, fish naturally eat mosquitoes. Some fish eat the eggs of others or their own. Remove plants with eggs on them to another area, or have your breeding area, real shallow, with rocks around the edge, where large fish cannot get to the eggs, after they have spauned. Parrotts Feather is a plant that fish would like to lay their eggs in. Koy don’t seem to eat small fish, perhaps they eat some along with the frogs eating them. So either a regular balanced, thinned out, or cover your space with a net to keep out the frogs. I am pretty sure they would take care of wiping out your fish eggs or babies. Rock Salt-add a handful helps the fish breath, and gets rid of any bacteria that might be harming your fish. Watch out not to get the salt all over your plants, it will cause spots, til new growth. Add under water lights or overhead for added enjoyment, which I have done. Lots of hiding the electrical, and changing bulbs, or cleaning the face where you can see after a while. Really enjoyed at first, but don’t really recommend, natural clean/see through the water, with balanced echosystem. There are two very good cleaners if you want to use, Barley Straw clump or liquid – a natural method, not needed all the time, but if a clearing is needed. Fish will eat alge, or duck will clear a pond of unwanted plants, but it could end up muddy looking for a while. Shade from trees will also help keep down the alge, cool the pond for the fish. dip out your watergarden in the late Fall or early Winter for any dying growth or leaves you want out..You don’t have to feed fish after the water reaches 50 degrees or lower, they can do a lot of eating natural things too, so don’t worry a lot about over feeding them, it might cause a disease. Enjoy making your pond. After starting a family, worked at making the garden, while building the home sweat equity and the gardens was added to at different times. TN Foothills
