Christians believe that God reveals himself as three persons: God the Father. God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit or (Holy Ghost) , but these three persons are one and indivisible. This article of faith, which fundamentially differentiates Christianity from Judasism and Islam, was defined at the Councils of Nicea (325) and Constantinople (381) and is enshrined in the Nicene and Athanasian creeds. Roman Catholic Church in the 11th century was the result of a prolonged dispute as to the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the other persons of the Trinity. TheGreek Church maintained that the Holy Spirity proceeded only from the Father whereas the Latin Church insisted that the Holy Spirit preceeded from the Father and the Son. (the filioque clause)

Officially recognized in 1334.
