Most Camellia varieties prefer shade. My first encounter with these beauties were in the south. Camellia Japonica is the state flower of Alabama. The early varieties can get frozen if budding when it is extremely cold. These rare and unique plants with so much beauty, resembling a rose. You can enjoy the buds for such a long time, very, very slow to open. Some grow into small trees, and colors range from white to vivid red. The cold weather or the sun burns the leaves, I prefer to have them protected under the canope of larger trees. They can be used for a house plant.
