Out of the Darkness
This is a photo of a magnificent Friesian stallion and his lovely owner Stefanie, who is dressed in a satin gown we desinged and was sewn by her mother-in-law, Jackie. I shot with my Canon Rebel and the Canon 70-200 series L 2.8 IS lens, in raw and converted in PSCS3. I didn’t like the bg, so I created my own. I created a new file, filled with blue, added a gradient for more atmosphere, used tree branch brushes from deviant art, added a little texture on larger branch, dodged and burned where desired, used different shades of blue to create more depth on branches. I used the channel mixer to the original photo of horse and rider to give a night feel, selected them and cut and dragged them onto layered new bg. Shot this with my Canon Rebel XT and the 18-55 mm lens that came with it.

Jean Hildebrant replied
Thanks Les, I’m excited about this shoot and I will be doing another one with them very soon. I was wanting to achieve a JW Waterhouse feel with the dress and the horse, I fell in love with at first site :)

Ya know, being a digital artist myself (and I don’t mean “vectors”!)
I followed every tiny bit of what you did here, and saw the process coming
together in my mind. Step by step. (that is so cool!) Thanks for detailing
it so well. This is…mind blowingly good. So many shades of blue here.
To the untrained eye, it’s just “blue”...but I see oceans. :) I also like
that you allowed the lighting on the (harness? I’m so horse ignorant)
to gleam, on its head. It draws the eye immediately over and then
back to her shoulder, up to her face. (and repeats) Keeping the
eyes visually entertained and appreciating all of the detail. Love this. :)
