King Vulture Portrait .......

The King Vulture

The King Vulture, is a large Central and South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina.

The adult King Vulture is the most strikingly colored of the New World Vultures.

King Vultures have lived up to 30 years in captivity, though their lifespan in the wild is unknown.

This vulture uses urohydrosis, defecating on its legs, in order to lower its body temperature. Despite its bill and large size, it is relatively unaggressive at a kill and will normally back down rather than fight. The King Vulture lacks a voice box, though it can make low croaking noises and wheezing sounds. Its only natural predators are snakes, which will prey upon the vulture’s eggs and young, and large cats such as jaguars, which may surprise and kill an adult vulture at a carcass.

The King Vulture feeds solely on carrion and, unlike some New World Vultures, is not known to kill sick or dying animals for food.It often eats stranded fish along river banks, but does not come to village refuse dumps for food.Though it has keen eyesight which can help it locate food.

There is evidence that suggests a decline in population, though it is not significant enough to cause it to be listed. This decline is due primarily to habitat destruction and poaching.

Absolutely stunning capture of a very unusual bird .Have never seen anything like it .Not sure his way of keeping cool will catch on .I am sure next time we are on holiday complaining of being to hot it will be mentioned .I do think common vultures have lovely markings on the faces .The hotel we go to in the Gambia feed the vultures every day between 11-30-12 noon It’s quite an attraction
for people to see .Then the taps are turned on for them to bathe and afterwards the vultures stand around with their wings outspread to dry, Apparently they can’t fly when their feathers are wet can they ??

  • jdmphotography replied

Hi lilian, Thank you for this interesting info I have also read about this when water bound they find it very difficult to fly indeed and leave them self’s more open to other predators …..... !

The one at the Safari Park is in a pretty small area. Some of the smaller animals that can’t go free (in my opinion) don’t have enough room. They are still fairly a new place and are always making changes…so I hope these areas will be made larger for those type animals. I really doubt they would let me in there. I might still ask anyway. :)) It never hurts to ask!

  • jdmphotography replied

Some times you have to be a little cheeky Ginny to get what you won’t so your right it never hurts to ask’ that’s a real shame as these large birds need a lot of room …......
