Chickens are omnivores.In the wild, they often scratch at the soil to search for seeds, insects and even larger animals such as lizards or young mice.

Chickens in nature may live for five to eleven years depending on the breed.In commercial intensive farming, a meat Chicken generally lives only six weeks before slaughter.A free range or organic meat chicken will usually be slaughtered at about 14 weeks. Hens of special laying breeds may produce as many as 300 eggs a year. After 12 months, the hen’s egg-laying ability starts to decline, and commercial laying hens are then slaughtered and used in baby foods, pet foods, pies and other processed foods.The world’s oldest chicken, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, died of heart failure when she was 16 years old.
The male can be differentiated from the female by its comb

Roosters can usually be differentiated from hens by their striking plumage, marked by long flowing tails and shiny, pointed feathers on their necks and backs (the hackles and saddle)—these are often colored differently from the hackles and saddles of females.

    LOL! I have free range chickens that love to hang out in my forest! Annie gets her name from the old Annie Get You Gun musical, except she is always there when I am planting waithing for me to dig up her a worm!! So her full name is Annie Get Your Worm!! Silly me! But I just love my chickens!! AND THEIR EGGS :) :) Where did you take this beauty?

    What a great story thanks for the info brilliant ! lol A bit of a fluke really I was up on the Fens of Cambridgeshire England Trying to spot birds of pray when out popped a very friendly chicken from a hole in a fence on a small holding of free range ! ........ She was a cute and very friendly bird and to be honest I could of taken her home for a pet …....... lol

    LOL! They make the greatest pets! They are a bird of prey so to speak as well! There will never be a snake in my yard, and if one ventures in he will be real sorry!! They will all surround it and when it is cornered just right, they attack, and if it doesn’t manage to get away it become chicken food! :) :) no matter what size it is!
