On 9 February 2009, a date which marks the end of the 2 week Chinese New Year Festivities, the soon to be opened Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Beijing caught fire. The blaze was extremely fierce, with large sections of the fabric of the building seen falling to the ground. When this photo was taken, the firefighters had been on the scene for some time and had dampened most of the flames. At the time of writing, it is not known if anyone was hurt. and it it uncertain whether the cause of the fire was related to the large numbers of fireworks being sent up into the night to mark Lantern Festival.
