This old willow-tree at the River Waal at Varik in the Netherlands is quite exceptional, due to its size and its position. The ground on which it stands is flooded regularly by the river. The eye-catching stone package around its trunk is meant to prevent its roots to be washed out by the strong currents of the river floods. Without this shield this impressive tree would probably have long been a goner.
