Holland's greatest thinker
I think it is time again to get out of the forests for a moment. After all, there is so much more to the Netherlands than beautiful nature. And Spinoza has been waiting so long. Not only just this shot, but much more important, for the monument which you see here. There is an older monument of this great 17th-century thinker in The Hague dating from 1880, but there had not been one in Amsterdam where he was born in 1632. It was only in 2008 that this monument was placed just in the centre of the city near the new Amsterdam townhall. The text on the monument is: The purpose of the state is freedom.
Today Baruch de Spinoza is considered to be one of Western philosophy’s most important philosophers. If you want to know a lot more about him, just try here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baruch_Spinoza

Your lighting is very well done, the highlights on his hair set the face off so it can be clearly seen. Very well placed figure, and the thought ‘the purpose of the state’ needs to be recognized by a few people.

“The Purpose of the State is Freedom” Hmmm…. as somebody who lives in the most supervised and monitored country in the world – England – I can’t help but marvel at that… I photo that really makes you think!
