Because You're Not A Poet

You don’t seem to understand
that I’m a poet
My eyes don’t see the same world yours do, dear
There’s no such thing as black and white in my world
For me things aren’t so mercifully clear

You don’t get it do you
that I am a poet
Us poets take things tragically hard
All the sadness in the world is on my shoulders
I’m bending, breaking, wounded, bruised, and scarred

The sooner that you realize
I’m a poet
The better it will be for you, my love
Then you’ll know the reasons why I suffer
And my dark days you’ll be less impatient of

You’ll never understand
you’re not a poet
You’ll never feel the fury that I’ve felt
Instead of being happy that you want me
I’m angry you once wanted someone else

I didn’t ask for this affliction
As a poet
I feel the words your hands can’t as well say
The fact that you’ve known bodies long before mine
Steals my thunder and my joy away

Don’t forget dear,
that I am a poet
I could slaughter you with words like razor blades
But I will hold my anguish all inside me
And write it down some other rainy day.

    Paul Rees-Jones

Absolutely an amazing piece. You have captured the essense of a poet and how poets interpret and communicate, and of course how those who do not enjoy or understand poetry just stand there with a blank look saying, “What the heck is wrong now?”...I love this…

  • Jboo09 replied

Thanks so much Paul! Lol – exacly!!!

    We love and we hate
    We speak and state
    We sing and quake
    We praise and berate

    They hear and they see
    They listen and read
    They watch as we bleed
    They devour our words
    and are freed

to go overtly into how much i appriciated this i will give you details into why: i was left, parted, put aside until his mind can see, but to put it simply he is afraid of me, afraid of the words i speak, the emotions i can feel. for he doesn’t understand… what it means to be a poet.

  • Jboo09 replied

    Exactly!!! well said :)

Im so glad that some body gets it!!!!!!What a great read. What a beautiful mind this work must have come from!! So you are the one who has traveled through the minds of all poets and written down what you saw. For you are the one who touched this young poet and now i write down what i feel.

spoken from the soul of a true poet. i also like the concept of words as weapon metaphor. you can hit me, and the bruise will heal, but a set of sharp words will leave a cut that lasts forever.

ah the pains of being creative…tell me its worth it..

  • Jboo09 replied

Creativity is rewarding and “worth it” because no matter what your art form, when you have completed a piece of art, whether it be a poem, a song, a picture, any outlet for your pain, you are then able to step back and distance yourself from that pain, like you’ve removed it from yourself and placed it in your art, where it may be helpful to others, remembered, immortalized.

“Us poets take things tragically hard

    I like the rythm,
Every 2nd line in each verse brought me back to the true convictions of the artist.
It was like a chorus in my head that was at once, familiar.
It seemed to get a bit nasty at the end, which i also really liked…
-were you angry when you wrote this?

You know I didn’t really read it as a poem. I kind of heard it as a song in my head. As if it was some extra song from the Sound of Music with someone like Julie Andrews singing it.

Sorry not to take anthing away but you can just ditty this along with song.

    I love it.

    the final lines are superb…!
u have shown how much we can do with words and have encased the power of a poet within the last few lines.. it shows what you are capable of and what you can resort for if you wanted revenge…and how u will refrain from it…
    lovely poem…:)

Poets, like the Phoenix, have no choice but to rise from their own ashes just to sing their stories once more… every time we write we reinvent ourselves and our world. Often a painful process, but there is no other choice that satisfies our need to express the poetic joys and conflicts that weave the tapestry of Life seen through a poet’s eyes. Beautifully crafted! Thank you for feeding me with your poetry.
