Vick's Dogs

How can they hurt you?
Slaughter you,
starve you?
How can they watch
as you are destroyed?

How can they beat you?
Drowned you,
and leave you?
How can they jeer
and applaud and enjoy?

Enjoy that you’re suffering,
But fearlessly strong.

Your soul is a diamond
Not knowing what you hope for
was hopeless all along

Because they will never love you
the way that you love them
He will never hurt for you
the way you hurt for him
When your lying, dying
glazed eyes searching in dismay
The ultimate betrayal…
Watch them turn and walk away.

Being the proud owner of two pit bulls, I’m shocked and sickened by what some heartless cowards will do to an animal who lives and breathes only to please them. I wrote this to express just a little bit of my feelings about the epidemic of dog fighting in this sad country.

Oh my gosh Jboo, do you see the similarities here? This could be a poem describing Jesus before Pilate!!!

  • Wow I hadn’t looked at it that way… gave me goosebumps! Thanks for pointing that out.

another masterpiece. i feel like, it’s not only about a “dog”, but as we are human too. we are the hounds as well as “the others”. yes, how could we be so cruel to wour fellowmen.
    I feel you!

  • Soo true!

Did you ever stop and think that your poem could be looked at in so many different ways. Like Martin said, God. But you can look at it as being anyone. From anything to everything. When I read it, I felt that it could also be about a person who is in love and wrongfully done.
    I love it……………..

  • licious… actually yes I figured readers would have a lot of different interpretations for this one, so I decided to name it “Vick’s Dogs” so it would be clear what I was thinking when I wrote it… but your right, sadly there are so many applications because there is so much cruelty in this world, not just cruelty to fighting dogs.

Brilliant and incredibly moving. I whole-heartedly agree with you that something should be done about the barbaric animal cruelty that exists in this world. It needs someone like you to stand up and say something. Have you thought about submitting this to any media, I’m sure they’d publish it and give it the audience it deserves.
I also agree with the other comments – that this poem could actually represent many things, including the troubles in the Middle East. This could be describing a soldier sent to Iraq.
I’m adding this to my favourites so that more people can read your poem too.

  • Hobbers, thanks so much for reading this and for your comments. Something definitely does need to be done and I would love to find some way I could help, but I don’t know if I would be strong enough. My heart breaks to pieces everytime I see or hear about an abused or even homeless animal…if I could somehow turn my blubbering and tears in to determination and resolve I can only imagine the change I could make! :)

I seriously think that you should look at sending this off to either newspapers or magazines, asking them to run a story on the subject. The best thing any of us can do is try to educate others, and that would be the perfect way of doing so. Alternatively, send it to dog/animal charities asking them to put it on their website. To be able to write such a powerful poem about dog fighting shows you have the strength you need to stand up and speak your mind.

Oh wow ok I’m crying a bit now. I wasn’t expecting to be hit so powerfully right in my chest. This is so painfully powerful. Gosh what a talent

  • Sorry it made you cry Rachael, but if more people could read this and get angry about what’s happening to animals maybe something would change. Thanks for reading and commenting!

I am owned by a dog and I am an animal lover and what you write is the sad truth I am afraid! When I read this, I thought of dog fighting! I guess it brings it home to me as I have a rescued Stafforshire Bull Terrier which are still used for fighting by barbaric people who arrange it underground. It breakes my heart to see or hear any animal cruelty and the last verse really moved me.

  • Yup, dog fighting is exactly what it is about… I have two pit bull’s and they’re like my kids I love them so much. You’re right, dog fighting IS barbaric, and if someone could do those things to innocent animals just think of what else they’re capable of. Thanks for reading and commenting!

this can be read on different levels but as it clearly had to do with dog fighting and the Michael Vick case, I applaud you for writing such a powerful, compelling piece! Superbly well done!
