The Decorator

I wrote this poem to go with my photograph ‘The Decorator’
here
It was during the time of football related hooliganism and skinheads in the 70s.

The Decorator belongs to the following groups:

! Creative Writing & Poetry !, Something To Say, The Word Tree and United Kingdom

Under bluest sky
Flecked with wispy cloud
He stands
In darkened doorway.
Waiting.

Stark letters announce
Tattooist.
But black boarded windows
Suggest unsavoury acts,
Not beating drums.

Dragons will die today
On chests and backs.
Love/Hate clenched fists
Will swell the ranks of
Skinhead fighters,

Parading on Kop and precinct,
With tainted badges
On hand and neck, abreast
Snakes, swallows, sweethearts
And “I love Mam”.

I like this Denis. It paints a very vivid picture of the culture. I love the opening line and the the closing line. They both suggest innocence yet this is juxtaposed in the lines between which illustrate the sinisterness of skinhead ideology. Great write Mr Dalby.
