Ed O’Donnell has been a Leeds jazz trombone institution for as long as I can remember. He played with Ken Colyer and Acker Bilk in the fifties. Yesterday he played with his band at the Chapel Allerton festival in Leeds.
I took some photos of him warming up and then had a stroll. When I came back to see the gig, he was being attended to by two St John’s Ambulance medics. Apparently, he had fallen down some steps at the back the stage. His leg was badly cut and he had grazed and cut his arm too, but in true show-biz manner he insisted on playing on. My colour photo shows the bloody bandage and a couple wounds on his forearm. I know black and white rules for jazz shots, but this time colour is king! What a trooper!!!
