The incomparable Art Blakey at a gig for Leeds Jazz on 27th Match 1986. The lighting was a struggle and I ran out of film in the first set, then after the break they turned more lights on! Oh the joys of film.
Iflord HP5 pushed to the limit!
Check out this link for all the details and personell for this gig.

No kidding Denis…. this is such a cool shot of one of my favorites in Jazz. what an opportunity to not only listen to fantastic music, but to actually be able to have his image in your collection….. Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks Rick. It was such a big deal for us to get the Messengers. People came from far and wide to see Art and his guys. This is the link for the Leeds Jazz website with the details and more photos. The photo of Tim Williams on there is a mistake. He played with Abdullah Ibriham’s ‘Ekaya’

woow that grainy texture again…you did a wonderful job considering the situation you described…you are a pro!

  • Thanks a lot Irina. Perhaps a ‘pro’ would have overcome the problem, but I like grain anyway. I have used some PS filters to try and clean it up though.

  • Thanks Ken. Sadly Leeds jazz is no more. Ran out of money. time and committment. Now what to do with our time?

The band fee was £350…. worth every fffing penny. Great shot Denis

  • I have a copy of the contract somewhere… can’t believe he was so cheap. Do you remember the fan heater that smelled of fish and chips? Happy days. Thanks Mike.
