Antique photograph and text, layered with my own textures and images…

This beautiful young woman captured my imagination and lit a spark in my heart as I saw her sweet face looking out from the pages of a Victorian-era book in the collection of a household I was house-sitting for …

As I read the descriptions of her people and other ‘living races of mankind’ documented therein, I was overwhelmed with a great sorrow for their loss, for the degradation and objectification they suffered at the hands of the ‘great white man’ who swarmed over their lands and behaved as though the native peoples were curiosities to be toyed with.

The dignity and beauty of this young woman reached across the decades and miles and truly touched my soul. In some small way, I honour her life and passing with this work…The sorrow I feel is tempered with admiration and love, and the recognition of a truly sentient human being…

Note: I wondered at the red, white and blue that crept into this image – until I visited Wikipedia and saw the Hawaiian flag…

An expressionistic, exploratory artist, I create without restraint or intent. I am a passionate advocate of natural learning, and this organic approach informs all of my work, giving my creations their vibrancy and spontaneity. An abiding love of nature keeps me going when my rather warped sense of humour fails. Above all, I reject the dysfunction and pain our culture perpetuates. More of the same is of no interest to me. I say “YES” to that which is life-serving: let a new paradigm emerge!

thats interesting very …. i think it is the colour work that makes it

  • Thank you, mxsara – it worked out darker than I would have expected, but I think that reflects the feelings I had whilst working on it: it saddens me that human beings like this beautiful soul were treated as objects of curiosity and novelties by the ‘white man’ of their times…and that so much destruction and sadness were brought to their communities by their contact with the ‘empire’… x
