It’s been a while since I’ve found a cooperative pika. Summer is drawing to an end in the high country, and this little guy is well aware of that. Since pikas don’t hibernate, they have tp gather enough food to last them the long alpine winter. Pikas gather an average of 50lbs/22.7kg of food – for an 8oz/226g critter, that’s pretty impressive.
This little guy seems to be favoring his left front paw – I wonder if it’s injured. In all my images of him, he’s holding up that paw. It didn’t seem to slow him down, but it is a little concerning considering how much work he still has ahead of him. Since I’m recovering from knee surgery, I felt particularly empathic towards him. I hope he heals soon.
