I didn’t make it to RMNP today as planned, but thought I’d go ahead and post another elk image.
This is a big bull who had a small harem at the south end of Moraine Park. There still wasn’t a lot of intense action between the bulls, but this one was responding to another bull on the other side of the creek. He’s spending a lot of time herding cows (female elk) who have wandered away from the harem, bugling back at rival bulls, and dashing out to chase of smaller competing bulls.
All the photographers were waiting for a major clash between big rival bulls, but as of last weekend nothing was really happening yet. There’s a low pressure system in the park this weekend with snow and wind – maybe that’ll push along the rut.
