Some of you may be familiar with Larry the Pika – he lives at 14,000ft on Mt Evans. This is a different pika, who lives along Trail Ridge Road in RMNP. I keep checking the elk rut, and so far it’s too early in the season to see much action. Fortunately, the pika are still very active and don’t mind putting on a show.
Even though they live in loose colonies, pikas are very territorial and will quickly shout out a challenge to any interloper (human, pika or otherwise) entering their little kingdom. This little guy quickly spotted me and belted out a warning telling me I had entered his little area.
He realized pretty quickly that I was not threat and went about his business gathering food for the winter, running between my legs and even perching on my shoe.
