Maybe it’s just the foxes that I know, but it seems like the females are always more calm and relaxed than the males. It’s true with the red foxes I spend a lot of time with, and it’s apparently true of the arctic foxes at the Denver Zoo.

This is the female or vixen. She’s very calm and poised. Her partner is a hyperactive male. He was almost literally bouncing off the habitat, and frequently off her (much to her annoyance).

Since it’s a small habitat, it took a while to isolate her from her partner and the habitat. She’s a gorgeous little animal.

I’m primarily a nature photographer, usually wildlife, and I have lots of access to wildlife in Colorado. My main goal is to capture some of the individual personality of each of the animals I photograph – to document not just a fox, for instance, but to show something of that specific fox, something unique about that individual animal.

She is gorgeous Jay. Looks like there was a lot more snow when you were at the Zoo. There were two foxes in their habitat it you can call it that. It was quite small. I must have captured the male. The female was waiting at the door opening to get in. She was very much relaxed. I’ll post a phot of her later. Barb

  • I was there as it was snowing – that was part of the plan . . .

Wonderful shot! I’m glad you had the patience to wait for the shot you wanted.

  • Got to have patience to be a wildlife photographer – even if it’s at the zoo
