Pika Squeaking
Pikas spend the summer gathering food for the long, cold winter – they don’t hibernate. Get too close to their food and they let out a loud EEENK! It took me the better part of the summer of 2007 to catch Larry the pika at full squeak.

Jay I LOVE Pika, and it is the critter I miss most living back east away from Colorado!
Jay Ryser replied
I love these little guys too. I can understand why you miss them. I’ve been stalking this guy for a long time, and it took me forever to get a shot of him squeaking. In fact, that’s my project for the summer is to get some netter pika (and marmots – I like them too) shots.

Oh what a cutie! I’ve never heard of these! Is it a rodent? I want one! ;o)
Jay Ryser replied
They’re most closely related to hares & rabbits. Instead of hibernating, they gather plants & grasses to eating during the long winter months. They’re fascinating little animals.

Jay Ryser replied
They’re not the most common animal in the world – unless you travel to alpine regions, you may not even be aware of their existence.
