The Best Things In Life . . .

We had an early snow storm along the Front Range – in my area we got between 18-20+ inches, accumulating to over 2 feet in places.

Fortunately I like the snow, and an early dumping like this was a treat. I took the day off work and just before dark took the dog to his favorite park. He’s a 100 pound Akita, and he’s a little nuts on his good days. In the snow, he absolutely loses it.

His favorite activity in the world is hunting voles (field mice) in the snow. He never actually catches one (he’s on a leash), but that doesn’t stop him from trying.

His old tactic used to be jumping in the air to pounce on a vole, like foxes and coyotes do, but his leash is too short for that, so he adapts by tunneling under the snow. If the snow is deep enough (and it was the other day), he muscles his way in and crawls along, following vole holes, bursting out a few feet further along.

Several times he disappeared under the snow, his red leash the only indication he was still close by.
