Roaring

I picked a heck of a weekend to go back to RMNP looking for elk. A front had moved through the Front Range, bringing cold temps and snow – just the way I like it!! It’s a little late in the rut, so there weren’t a lot of crowds either (again, just the way I like it).

The bad news was there were few elk, I saw no jousting, and there were few challengers. That didn’t stop this bull from responding to the few bellowed challenges issued by other bulls.

This bull had a harem of less than a dozen cows, and was pretty relaxed having me photograph him. I was able to use the car as a blind and stay relatively warm and comfortable for the shoot – rare treat. Most of the time I’m out in the worst weather, struggling to stay warm and not get blown off a mountain summit.

Recently watched a series on Yellowstone, which featured these guys. They blew me away with their strength when fighting. I am afraid our natives not quite so fierce as yours. Splendid fellow.

Wow, perfect Jay! I like how he stands out against the background. Nice with the snow there, and the bush is in the right position to make this a great composition. I was up there the weekend before, and yes, there were a lot of people.

Great shot, Jay! I can almost hear him bugling. Gorgeous rack. We looked for bull moose in the mountains, but ironically found one near our house munching on bushes and trees. No harem to be seen.
