Bugling On A Cold Morning
I was out early searching for elk. When I got to Moraine Park, there was a layer of fog over most of the open area. The sun hadn’t quite reached up and over the ridge, so things were still pretty dark.
I tried to maneuver around to catch this big bull with the fog behind him, but just when I almost had the angle and the light, he moved into the trees.
The light was still pretty low, but I was able to catch his breath as he bugled.

Ooooh, this really captures the essence of the season, Jay; fantastic the way you have caught the bull’s breath… I can almost here him!
Jay Ryser replied
I love to get out early, way before the sun is up, and just sit and listen to the elk. The bulls do the bugling, but the cows make this funny little noise as well.. I could sit and listen for hours.

Excellent. Gee, I wonder what they sound like :)

I’m dragging my son up next time and have him work the video camera the a separate mic.

I’m with you about sitting and listening, Jay; and the cow / calf talk just melts my heart. Sometimes I’m able to sneak up on the ladies and babies when they don’t know I’m around and listen to them jabbering away, then there’s a bark from one of the cows and I know one has figured out I’m there. Magic, pure magic.

Nicely composed and I agree with A.M Ruttle in that the Bull’s breath really does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the season! : )
