Marmot with an Attitude
This is a young marmot, a yearling (born last year). He’s probably still living with the family unit and may take off on his own this summer to find his own territory and maybe even a mate.
I kept hoping he was going to let out a good squeak or bark, but all he would ever do is stick out his tongue at me.
Marmots are considered to be one of the few altruistic species on this planet – they selflessly keep themselves in danger to warn others of potential danger.
Marmots are an at risk species due to climate change. Because summers in the mountains are so brief, they try to eat and gain as much weight as possible for the long winter hibernation.

Incredible image! He sort of looks like a cross between a gopher and a squirrel. Are they indigenous only to Mt. Evans?
Jay Ryser replied
They’re essentially high altitude ground hogs. They inhabit mountainous regions in the western US (Rockies & Sierras) and in European Alps. Fascinating little animals. And so much personality.

You can also find Marmots in Canada. The sub-species Vancouver Island Marmot is highly endangered. The town of Whistler, B.C. (home of the 2010 Olympics) is named after a Marmot’s alarm call.
Jay Ryser replied
I had no idea that’s now it got its name – thanks for the info!!
