Snowy Coyote
The slushy, rainy, snowy slop finally stopped yesterday, and temps got low enough last night to freeze the entire mix into a hard, crusty frosting. Since I figured my fox area would be a sloppy mess, I decided to go look for coyotes. I ran into a friend who had the same plan, and we had a great coyote day.
The skies were finally clear, and we had some great directional morning sun.
This is a good sized coyote who was out in the open field hunting for voles. I was hoping to catch a leap in the air as he hunted – he tensed up a few times, but never did the jump. Maybe the snow was too hard for that kind of hunting. Today, he didn’t mind us getting too close for some shots. I filled up an 8gb card.

Beautiful shot, Jay. I read in the newspaper about a shelter for baby foxes. It seems that weather has caused some to have to be rescued. I am going to the shelter this week. xoxo
Jay Ryser replied
Poor little kits

Oh Jay you missed out my friend. Was packed with photographers but was well worth it. They were so cute. Only 2, rumor at the hole is the Coyote got the other 2. Saw him too. He was a big boy, too fast for the camera though!!! Thought sure you would have been there, that is why I did not bmail you. Just expected you to be there. Saw you yesterday at my Gma’s walkin the dog, was gonna hollar but did not want to get washed away! LOL
Jay Ryser replied
I figured it was gonna be a sloppy mud fest, so I went after the coyote.
Waaaaaaaaaaiiiit a minute – it was kinda cold this morning – you wouldn’t have gone out on a cold morning . . .
Kasey Cline
Was beautiful morning…You want proof???
Jay Ryser replied
(big sigh) yeah

Jay finally got his coyote. Idea – try cropping vertically, keeping his shadow.
Jay Ryser replied
I have some in portrait orientation, but I liked this one too. Finally, I find a cooperative coyote, but miss fox kits.

I knew it was going to be a great animal photography day, but didn’t have a chance to leave the house. This is so perfect, and I like how you composed it. Horizontal works fine. Post a vertical, so we can compare.

He is a good looking coyote. The ones I have seen are pretty raggedy. Great shot! :D
Jay Ryser replied
I got some shots of him doing a little snow bath – very cute

He looks king of his area. Great composition—it is good to see what their surrounds are, sometimes I think we are inclined to knock out too much to detriment of the overall image.
Jay Ryser replied
It’s hard to get a clean shot anyway – but I do like the animal-scape aspect

Fantastic – this is a great shot from what sounds like a good coyote day, well done
Jay Ryser replied
It was a very good coyote day – unfortunately, it was a good fox kit day too

Jay, straight to Favorites for this coyote. I have the darn critters all over my yard, on my deck, and scent-marking where my beloved dog marks his territory in his canine ‘kingdom.’ One of these days I’ll have to try taking some photos of the local coyotes. It wasn’t so long ago in the Chicago suburbs that we’d never see a coyote. Now they are everywhere. Your image is swell, reminding me of coyotes’ beauty as well as their wily, adaptive nature.
Jay Ryser replied
I’m not real fond of coyotes when they’re after my foxes, but on their own, they’re fascinating

Jay, I have to tell you, this is a great shot of the Coyote. Love the way he is looking right at you.
We surely missed you at the fox hole this morning..seems Kasey and I were the only RB’rs there…
Was a wonderfully warm day for our love of animals..
Jay Ryser replied
And it was a cold morning, so I figured Kasey was kidding about going there

I never see anything ijn our parks. Saw a bear once.

Hard to imagine an urban park without a coyote or 2

Great Coyote and love the detail of the snow sparkling around him/her. I like the cropping idea as an alternative too.
