Steam Train Leaving Chama
This is the Toltic & Cumbres Steam Train pulling out of Chama, New Mexico. Pictured is the train, which has two engines to pull up to the pass and the coal handling system with the coal elevator and coal storage bin. These engines burn real coal that is shoveled into the firebox of the engines.
Today, we are “chasing” the train! The trains travels about 20 mph or less. The highway crosses the tracks 5 or 6 times and the road runs along side about 200 yards apart. There are more than plenty of opportunities to stop and take plenty of pictures. The train will be pulling hard as it climbs to the top of Cumbres Pass. Plenty of huffing and puffing!!!! Plenty of photo ops!!! if you ride the train, catch it in Chama. You can feel this train surging forward as it climbs towards the pass. The best seat on the train is the open car with no seats. You will want to ride there as it has the best views.
Aaaahh! The wind in the face, the train whistle, whistle echoing in the canyon, the smells, the soot in the air….........

Fantastic image well made. I see you share a passion of mine. I love the sound and smell of steam trains on the track. You have captured this beautyfully with great composition, that smoke is amazing. One day ill get to capture some of these Beauty’s :-)
