River Walk by Jay Gross

River Walk by

The River Walk under the 1927 Gervais Street Bridge in West Columbia, South Carolina, at late dusk by the light of the streetlights in the picture. That’s Columbia on the other side of the river. I cropped off the ginormous hideous billboard. Canon 50-D, Canon 10-22mm lens at 10mm, a 1.3-second exposure at f/3.5 on a tripod. The bronze color is from the sodium vapor lamps.

great use of existing lighting, mood and drama

  • Thank you. I spotted the shot the evening before and tried to get it with my pocketable pointy-shooty thingus, but just had to go back with the 50-D with wideangle and tripod to get it. -J:

Nice shot. The time of day was perfect to give you such good sky coloring.

  • Thanks! The sky came out bluer in the picture than it looked in person, for some reason – maybe the long exposure, or maybe my eyes adjusted to the orange sodium vapor light and didn’t perceive the sky the same as the camera. Looks much better blue, too. -J:

This is beautiful, Jay. Where did you take this?

  • Thanks! About 50 feet from where you shot the same pic last year. -J:

I saw a ribbon next to this at the SC State Fair today. Congratulations!

The way you have it framed is interesting, also.

  • Thanks greatly for noticing! I have two pieces in the fair and both won prizes. This one, a 20×30 canvas that I bought from RedBubble.com (outstandingly done and beautifully gallery-wrapped) won a $350 Purchase Award. My Chorus Line piece, a 12×22 artpaper print off of my Epson R2400, won a $175 Merit Award.

Both were framed at Hobby Lobby in West Columbia, and Tiffani put in the extra effort to make the Bridge do what I wanted – RedBubble’s imaging doesn’t go around the edges of the canvas stretchers, so the sides had to be painted black to accommodate the stand-off frame.

Sorry I overlooked Chorus Line while I was there.

My “Columbia Awakens” won a Purchase award, but I don’t know how much yet. I can’t find where those awards are listed on the fair website. My Sheldon Church" image was juried out. Both were framed by RedBubble.

  • Aha, I thought that would be a winner but I missed it at the artists’ reception, ‘cause I was way ill the whole time, and haven’t been to the fair yet. My green ribbon has the amount of the award on it, but I think it’s whatever you’ve set as the price for the piece – in my case that’s the same as the ribbon. -J:

Thanks for the info. This is only my second time entering art in the fair and first time to have a piece win an award of any kind.
