A metal sculpture and fountain on the Sears-Roebuck side of Columbia Mall in Columbia, South Carolina. Calumet 4×5, S-Caltar 210mm lens, available light – a glorious mixture of daylight from the huge skylights, incandescent spots, color-gelled fountain lights, storefront fluorescents, and even some mall mercury vapor. 45-seconds at f/32. We gave the people one-dollar modeling fees and made them sign model releases (as the client insisted) and swear not to move during the exposures. This image was printed in Sears’s national corporate annual report, which featured newly opened stores – mid 1970s. Scanned from a color negative. What looks like ripples in the water is actually Newton’s rings from the (expensive!) Agfa scanner’s crummy glass carrier.
