Norther Flicker - Ottawa Ontario by

The Northern is a migratory species that comes back into our area to nest and raise some young. It is easily recognized in Ottawa due to it’s brown colour. the three non-migratory woodpeckers we have are all variations of Black, White and Red.

Just a beautiful capture. I love it. I will thank you as well for adding it to our group.

  • Thank you very much for the invitation, this summer I will have to keep an eye open for more woodpeckers.

The erstwhile Yellow-Shafted, I’d guess, & it looks like a female… sans mustache. I love these birds – they spend a LOT of time in our lawn, wreaking havoc on the ant populations!!

  • The Yellow Shafted is apparently a subspecies of this bird. I think you are correct this is a female. She is one of a mating pair we found this summer.
