Chickadee on ice covered branch - Ottawa, Ontario by

I always say one always has a friend when there are Chickadees around. They have to be the most cheerful birds in any Northern forest. Always willing to take a hand out, these friendly little birds are a great way to introduce children to the wonderful world of birds and nature.

My favorite of all the songbirds is the chickadee. You summed their character up perfectly Michael! This is a lovely photo with this darling little one perched on an icy branch.

I know that look, too! Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, both brands of Nuthatch, Cardinals are regulars at our little window feeder, which is about two feet from me as I type. These little beggars are fearless (but soooo smart), & there’s one in particular that reads me the riot act if the sunflower seed supply gets low. It was that same individual that gave a Sharp-shinned hawk hell after it got a female cardinal right under the barberry bush beside the feeder. Every other bird in the area beat a hasty retreat, but this Chickadee returned twice & was very vocal. Fascinating little bird. I have also posted a shot of the feeder with a Chickadee hanging on the side, which I titled ‘I Ask For So Little, So Often’. Not a great photo by any means, but it sums up the everyday feeder fun.
