One of the hardest things to do when shooting outside in the winter is to keep your hands and fingers warm enough to operate your camera. Not only is it important to keep your hands from freezing so you can feel your buttons but it is imperative that you do not get frost bite on exposed fingers.
I have found a set of gloves that are excellent to fulfill both needs. The Heat 2 Smart glove specially designed for the Special Forces to wear in cold climates. But these gloves are easily adapted to the needs of photographers. By themselves they easily manage down to -10F and for colder temperatures down to -30F the addition of warmer packs makes it possible to shoot where only the very hearty would go.
This year we were very lucky to have two Boreal Owls spend the winter in Ottawa. This is the first time they have been confirmed staying for any length of time with in the city limits. Boreals are rare to find at any time. I had the good fortune to find it in a fairly open area and got some decent video footage of it. Please enjoy.
