It was always a thrill to see deer in the fields or woods. As I got more and more into photography I managed to be able to get closer to these beautiful elegant animals. One of my favourite encounters happened when my girlfriend and I were driving down a country road and we saw a doe and her baby in a ditch along the side of the road. We stopped down and the mother walked out onto the road and crossed to some trees on the other side. The young one was a little more cautious and stayed back a bit, so I guess it did not see where the mother went in. It finally crossed the road about 20 feet in front of us and started to move along the road away from us. I was outside my car using it as a blind. I did not hear any noise but all of a sudden the baby stopped and looked back as the mother stepped out of the trees. The baby quickly ran to it’s mother and they touched noses in greeting, then both went back into the trees. I have seem many deer in my life but there was something really special about that doe. She was so delicate and loving to her baby. It is a moment I will always remember.
