So around November last year I completed my three years of study in Design and Advertising. Since then I have been scouring the internet for a job. While there seems to always be at least a few design jobs going, most of them are asking for someone with 3-5 years of industry experience, even for Junior positions. This just so happens to make it quite difficult to get a job when you have just graduated.
I’ve done a fair amount of stand alone jobs for clients such as book layouts, CD’s, corporate ID, logos, flyers, posters etc… not to mention three years of full time study, so I like to think I have some clue as to what I’m doing. However, besides the fact that I don’t have ‘official’ industry experience, there are also a bazillion other graduates all looking for jobs as well. The last two jobs I applied for had over 160 applicants for one and over 300 applicants for the other. I made the top three of one of them, which was incredibly encouraging, however still lost the job to someone with “more experience”. I understand where employers are coming from but it’s hard to get experience when no one will give you a chance.
So on that note, if anyone happens to know someone who is looking to employ a graphic designer in/around Melbourne then feel free to let me know. I’d love to work in a design studio of some sort, but working in the design department of a company could also be good. Full time, part time, anything I can get. Unfortunately I can’t really afford to take an unpaid internship position, as much as I’d love the experience, but if you know of any low paying ones I may still be interested. Even one off freelance jobs are helpful.
Any help would be massively appreciated!
Thanks heaps for your time guys! :D
