Knock Bay is a real place on Skye, the inner Hebridian, Scottish island. It is the location of a small ruined castle, Knock Castle, that proved quite an ordeal to reach. I’d found the magical and tantalising castle symbol on my map of Skye and was determined to visit it. You could plainly see the picturesque ruin from the road but to physically get to it required several attempts, negotiating a path across a burn, bogs and private land.

I photographed the castle from every angle and to within an inch of its life but, ironically, I doubt it will ever become a painting- this work resulted from pointing my camera in the opposite direction and painting a rock feature next to Knock Castle…
