We had a week in Rome on our way home, after two years in Britain. Like York, I was fascinated by the way the architecture consisted of different periods all jumbled together- sometimes in the one building. In York you sometimes saw Roman foundations with subsequent Viking, Medieval and even Victorian parts contributing to the whole. The locals in Rome seemed to have a very casual relationship with all these ancient fragments scattered about the city.
This painting is an edited, heavily re-envisioned picture of a location we stumbled on exploring the city.
